Linus – GA

Meet adoptable senior rocker dog Linus who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who is as laid back as he is. You like to chill out, well he will gladly chill out with you. He is looking for someone to love him and always keep him safe.

From his rescue caregiver: Silver fox seeking a partner who appreciates the finer things in life, like soft beds, sleeping in late, and long, slow walks along the beach. I’m not in any hurry to get where I’m going, and if you agree that the journey is just as important as the destination, we’ll get along great.

Indigo -MI

Meet sweet adoptable bully Indigo who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish him and always keep him safe.

Marmite – 3 year old female Whippet Cross

Marmite is an approximately 3 year old Whippet cross who found herself on death row in the pound. She is predominantly Whippet in both her size and her character! Well, we are pleased to say those days are long behind her, she is fit as a fiddle and what a diva she has now become, Marmite is quite literally the best dog ever, I have come so close to keeping her myself, but she is far too good to join the rat pack permanently, I just know the perfect home is waiting patiently for a dog just like her!

Marmite will steal your bed, and your heart, she is strikingly beautiful and gets compliments wherever she goes which of course, she is happy to lap up! Marmite is a real couch potato of a dog, she is very quiet and doesn’t really seem to know how to be a dog, although she has just recently started to play with the other dogs here, and she certainly loves to snuggle with them!

JoJo- WA

Meet adoptable 10 week old mini-heeler puppy JoJo who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish him, make positive reinforcement training/socialization a priority and always keep him safe.

Sterling – CA

Meet adoptable deaf dog Sterling who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish him, provide a stable routine and always keep him safe.

From the shelter: If you were looking for a deaf pit bull, you just found him! Meet Sterling. He was hit by a car and on a euthanasia list, Sterling’s leg was set with a splint and he received crate rest. The leg healed up just fine. This guy is great dog. He gets along with everyone and other dogs. He doesn’t like change and tends to stop eating while he adjusts to his new surroundings.

Tansy – 18 month old female Shih Tzu

Tansy is a gorgeous Shih Tzu of approx 18 months old Shih Tzu who came into rescue when she was left unclaimed in the pound. When she was spayed it became apparent that she had been in pup but sadly these had died and been stuck inside her, the most likely reason she wasn’t reclaimed!

Tansy is a really sweet little lady that just craves love and cuddles! She needs a home that has experience of the breed and is aware of their health and grooming requirements. Tansy will need regular grooming as she is a non moulting breed. Tansy is a typical little lap dog. She loves nothing more than cuddles, and she will quite literally spend her entire day snuggled with you. She also likes to snuggle under the duvet with you at night.

Tansy absolutely loves a walk, and is loving experiencing new things and meeting new people. She loves to explore! Tansy is house trained and non destructive, She mixes fine with other dogs, would be happy to live with other dogs or would be equally happy as the only dog. She is a very happy little lady that just loves life. She is fine to be left for short periods as long as She has a bed to snuggle up in, and she is not destructive.

Tansy can live with children age 8 years plus. Tansy is a very sweet little dog, that is very low maintenance, that desperately wants a lap of her own to snuggle up on, can you offer her this?

Millie – 12 year old female Staffordshire Bull Terrier

On Tuesday 9th July Poor Millie was abandoned near to the rescue, left tied to a poo bin alone in the rain. We were heartbroken when we discovered her and upon closer inspection it became clear that she was in a bit of a mess. She was crawling with fleas, had long overgrown nails, broken teeth and was suffering with a nasty cough. After a full examination by our vet it was sadly revealed that Millie has mammary tumours with an x-ray revealing several possible masses in her chest. We will be repeating these x-rays in 2 weeks to confirm if this is definitely the case. At the moment Millie is receiving medication to help keep her comfortable and at this stage we do not know how long she will have. We are desperate to find Millie a long term foster home where she can live out the rest of her days being showered with love and attention as she should have always been.

Millie has a wonderful temperament despite everything she has been through, she is such a sweet, friendly girl and really is no trouble at all. Unfortunately she does not appear to like other dogs and so we are looking for a home where she will be the only pet. Due to her age we also feel she would be best suited to a quiet home free from young children with someone around for most of the day.

We will continue to support Millie whilst she is in a foster home and therefore it is important that she is local to the rescue so that she can meet regular appointments with our vet.

If you can help this special girl please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Gina – 2 year old female Terrier Cross

Gorgeous Gina is a Terrier cross who is small-medium sized and is 2 years old. She is in a shelter in Spain until she has a home to go to. Gina has beautiful markings, with a beautiful golden brown head, freckly legs and is white and golden on her body. Gina’s measurements are: Height 40cm; Length 40cm; Weight 10kg.

Gina appeared in an area surrounded by houses and a busy road, wandering around on a cold night, looking for someone who could take her home and save her. A girl was walking with her dog and found her. Gina approached and the girl could not leave her there. Back then she was only 5 months old, spent all this time in a foster home waiting for her adoption opportunity but it didn’t come. A change of circumstances made her come to the shelter and now Gina is really sad. We hope her photos and her story have touched your heart and she will be noticed now and can live the happy life she deserves.

Dottie – 12 year old female Dalmatian

Please meet 12 year old male Dottie the Dalmation. Dottie was handed in by her former owners as they could no longer keep her. Dottie has been spayed, microchipped and has restarted her vaccines as they had lapsed. She has also been wormed and flead. Dottie is a gorgeous girl who is happy to go for a stroll and then have a long nap! She enjoys her food and cuddles and is fine to live with children. Dottie has also lived with cats.

Dottie is initially a little timid around other dogs so would prefer to live without other dogs or with a canine friend who isn’t too bouncy and ‘in your face’. Dottie is house trained but she does sometimes wet her bed when she is asleep. This is easily managed with her waterproof washable bed, some pads and washing her blankets. We all get old at some point and I really do not feel this should prevent her from finding a family home – she is so confused at why she is kennels.

Flint – 10 month old male Cross-Breed

Flint is a 10 month old male Cross-Breed. Flint super young boy with lots of fun energy loves his walks and playing with other dogs and has quickly learnt recall. Has the potential to be good at agility or Cani cross certainly has the legs for it.

Initially shy with new people but you can soon gain his trust. Can be an only dog if you have time to burn off his energy or equally would be a great partner in crime for another dog who loves to bounce and play.

She sleeps through the night and doesn’t have any accidents. She’s clean during the day too and she eats well. She adores humans. She greets her fosterers with a waggy tail and kisses.

Twiggy is okay with other dogs. In the right circumstances she could be an only dog because she loves humans so much. She has had a check up at the vet and is healthy. She is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and has a passport. A home check and adoption fee apply.

Dexter – 5 year old male Shih Tzu

Everyone meet Dexter. He is a 5 year old male Shih Tzu who has found his way into rescue due to allergies in the family and his unpredictable behavior. Dexter is a sweet boy but a tad ridiculous at times. I think if you could put overthinking into a dog it would look like Dexter. He has a habit of freaking himself out over the simplest of things. Coming into rescue absolutely blew his little mind and it took me a few days to even be able to put a slip lead on him let alone touch him. Even then when he would jump up and ask for attention the little cogs in his head would suddenly start turning and he would completely freak out about me stroking him. Then ask for more when I stopped.

It’s been about 3 weeks now and we are starting to turn a corner with him. He loves frolicking around with the other dogs, I can put a lead on him and handle him fine. He’s happy to come to us and show us all his brilliant tricks for treats. It’s refreshing to see him forget about his anxiety and start to relax and be a proper dog. Dexter needs someone calm and balanced. He needs to know exactly what is expected of him and trust that the person knows how to keep him safe and not put him in situations that set him up to fail. Once he has that he will flourish into the most incredible little dog.

Dexter really loves other dogs and adores his walks. He gets so excited to go out. He’s such a sweet little lad and when you are past his initial fear he is very rewarding little chap. Dexter is housebroken, non destructive in the home and happy to be left for reasonable durations of time. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and will be subject to a homecheck and adoption donation. He will also come with 4 weeks free insurance and a voucher for a box of free food from Nutriment raw.

Sophie – 7 year old female German Shepherd Cross

Sophie is a gorgeous friendly 7 year old German Shepherd cross living in Northumberland looking for her forever home. She has come on leaps and bounds since arriving in her foster home, especially considering she was saved from a Romanian public shelter.

She isn’t a fan of the cats, so she wouldn’t be suitable to live with cats. She loves other dogs and could live with sensible older children.

Please adopt her!

Tricks of the Trade; Teaching Your Puppy to Walk Nicely on Leash

Ironically, pretty and animated on leash heeling is one of my favorite things about competition dog obedience.
I will admit, it isn’t “easy”.
But the best things in life aren’t “easy”, they take some effort.
So there are a couple “Tricks of the Trade” that I will share with you so you can get started.

#1  Make sure you are Marker Training

I am an avid clicker or marker trainer!

Without training with a “marker” how can you express to your dog that what he just did was what you wanted?

So often, we are busy to correct behavior but many people never ensure clear communication by marking good behaviors.

This is like going down a one lane highway with no exits and no way to turn around.

Good communication needs to be a 2 way street.  Sure, we often need to correct bad behavior, but it is even more important to give the dog the information about what we do like.

Imagine going to a foreign country where you don’t speak the language.

Every time you do something wrong people will hit you with a fly swatter.

There is little to no communication, except the fly swatter.

After a while, you would be a little timid and scared to show any behaviors, for fear that they would be wrong.

Wouldn’t you rather have people kindly show you, and help you and reward you for good choices?

Again, you are probably going to make mistakes but if communication is effective (even without speaking the same language) then your mistakes will be much less and you will learn what behaviors get you rewarded or paid.

If you haven’t jumped on the clicker/marker band wagon, please join us!  This is the best way to communicate with your dog!

#2  Always Use the Same Leash

I am a leash hoarder.  I will admit it.  I have more leashes than I know what to do with most days.

Personally, I prefer leather or fake leather leashes because they are soft on my hands.

And, although I have 6 ft leashes and 4 ft leashes and 10 ft leashes as well as tabs, I want to be consistent.

If one day I use a 4 ft leash and the next day I use a 6 ft leash to teach leash manners; it isn’t fair to my dog.

As I am changing my direction and trying to teach my dog about how long his leash is, and not to pull it is essential that the leash remains the same length.

Typically, I use a 6 foot leash for most training.  I want my dog to know that he has 5 and ½  feet before he pulls me.

#3  Use the hand Opposite the Dog to Hold the Leash

Being an obedience instructor, I have always taught “heel” on my left side with my dogs’ shoulders parallel to my leg.

If the dog is on my left, my right hand is on the leash.  The handle goes over my right thumb and I either let the leash slack across my thighs or I gather it up a bit in that right hand.

KEEP YOUR LEFT HAND OFF OF THE LEASH!!!!!

There is a little known phenomenon in dog training called opposition reflex.  If you pull, your dog pulls back harder!

It’s a vicious cycle.  The dog pulls, you ball up the leash shorter and wrap it around your wrist and pull back, to which, the dog pulls harder.

Stop pulling back!

Let that leash hang slack.  You will notice if the dog moves out past heel position and may begin to pull and this gives you time to lock in and brace for the pull or impact.

As you notice the dog move out past heel, you should change your direction to help him pay more attention to your body.  I think of it as a game of keep away… if you aren’t paying attention to me; I am going the other way.

#4  Use Your Body to Your Advantage

The older I get, the less I like to feel physically exhausted.

When I was younger, as a vet tech, I used to physically get down and bear hug all of the dogs that came into the clinic.

Now, at 43, I do things like use walls and my knees and thighs for restraint.  It is less physically draining.

I have learned some of these things about dog training too!  I want to do the most, with the least amount of effort.

Put your arm out in front of you.

Now ask someone to push or pull your arm down.

Because the arm is weak, it doesn’t take much to push or pull in around.

Now, lock your fist into your stomach, flexing your bicep and now ask someone to push or pull it.

Chances are it takes WAY more effort to move your arm and hand if it is locked  into your body.  Your core does the effort at taking impact.

Remember this!  If you want to be strong, use your core and lock in before the dog thinks about pulling.

Sling the Leash Behind Your Butt

When I have a dog that is an adamant puller, I sling the leash around behind me.

For instance, my right hand would be on the leash and the leash would go around behind me and hook to the dog on the left.

Then, if the dog pulls, he is pulling my core and my body.

Again, I want to refrain from opposition reflex and pulling back on my dog.

The difference here is that your backside can’t grab and pull the dog, it only pulls back when the dog pulls… effectively teaching him that he won’t get anywhere when he pulls.

Above all

Take the time that it takes to teach this very important skill!

Your dog, your friends and your family will thank you for it!

Don’t skip steps, invest in your dog’s leash manners!

Arlo – 16 month old male Dalmatian

Arlo is a beautiful 16 month old male Dalmatian. He had a very bad accident a few months ago which resulted in him having a leg amputated. Before coming into our care he lived happily with other dogs but the trauma of losing a leg and struggling to adjust was starting to cause friction with the other dogs in the home and considering there was also children in the home Arlo’s previous owners made the hard decision to bring him into our care.

They love him very much and he is a really lovely boy but he is now looking for someone with breed experience and no other dogs in the home.
