Dog Handling Tips: Pudsey – 2 year old male Lhasa Apso Cross

Pudsey is 2 year old male Lhasa Apso Cross. He was recently adopted but returned due to problems in the home with the resident dog. Despite being great with all the dogs here and all the dogs on walks etc it appears he doesn’t like to share his home with one. We feel this may have been because he came from a hoarding environment where there were many big dogs and a lot of fighting so he feels he has to guard the things he loves from other dogs. It’s a shame as he generally plays beautifully and loves other dogs who are smaller and the same size as him.

Pudsey is scared of new people and has been previously mistreated. He generally ignores new people (he doesn’t bark at them) but does react if they try to stroke him too quickly. It looks like he’s been grabbed very roughly by the collar before which triggers a fear response when people he doesn’t know try to stroke him. Once he knows you aren’t a threat he is absolutely great and adores cuddles and kisses.

He’s a real softie. Pudseys last home reported him to be utterly wonderful, very affectionate and great off lead just not brilliant with the resident dog. He will need potential adopters to understand that he will require space at first meets and allowed to approach you at his own pace not pushed. He’s generally not fussed by new people providing they don’t try and touch him straight away. If you bribe him with chicken and take him for a walk he will start to warm up very quickly. It was noted when he was away from us he was completely fine so it’s just initial nerves and sticking to what he knows. Our groomers said he was good to handle and bath also.

Pudsey loves people he knows and is very loyal. He’s housebroken and crate trained. Non destructive in the home and happy to be left for reasonable durations of time. His coat will need regular maintenance when it grows back in as it needed to be shaved due to matting. Pudsey needs a pet free adult only home to help him feel safe and secure again. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and will be subject to a home check and adoption donation. He will also come with 4 weeks free insurance and a voucher for a box of free food.
