Lia is a 2 year old female Ibizan Hound (Podenco) Cross. This delightful looking girl is Lia. She is in foster in Spain until she has a home to go to. Lia is small-medium sized and weighs 12kg. Lia is a sweet and calm girl who gets along very well with all the dogs in her foster home and the family. She is playful, and also obedient.
We are looking for a someone with previous experience with dogs, preferably sight hounds, who has plenty of time to train her. Lia will need a socialising with as many adults, children, dogs (puppies and adults), and other animals as possible. She needs to become used to a wide range of events, environments and situations. She walks very well on a lead, and is house-trained.
This is her story: Lia was wandering on the street, and she was heavily pregnant. We were told by people in the town and the night we rescued her, she gave birth to 3 beautiful puppies. Lia is totally recovered now and lives in a foster home with more dogs.
About the breed: The word “Podenco” is Spanish for hound, so the name Podenco Andaluz means Anadalusian Hound. Podencos have excellent sight, hearing and smell, which makes them good hunters, often employed for hunting rabbits. Sadly, as hunting season in Spain comes to an end, it is estimated that between 60,000 – 80,000 Spanish hunting dogs (Podencos as well as Galgos- Spanish Greyhounds) will be dumped on the streets.
Most of these perfectly healthy, sweet natured, dumped dogs are under the age of 2, and many of them will be with pup. They are the most abused breed of dog in the world. They are a smart, trainable dog and make a great family pet. They are a smart breed but can also be independent, and even stubborn at times. This being the case, this breed is not recommended for inexperienced dog owners.
This breed is usually gentle and playful with children, but he won’t tolerate rough treatment. This dog is a smart and active, so he requires a good deal of daily exercise which will prevent from developing destructive or aggressive tendencies out of boredom. This dog does has a high prey drive so cats and other pets may be a problem.
Lia is now neutered, fully vaccinated, chipped and has a passport. Homecheck and adoption fees apply.
