Dog Handling Tips: Finlay – 11 month old male Border Collie cross Pointer

Finlay is a very beautiful 11 month old male Border Collie cross Pointer. He came into our care as his owner had to move accommodation and wasn’t able to take him along. He is currently in a foster home. Finlay is a very friendly dog who loves all the attention he can get. He is also very bouncy and boisterous and loves to run around and play with his toys. He can get mouthy when he is overexcited. He is crate trained and generally travels well in the car.

Finlay is only an adolescent dog and seeing he has both Border Collie and Pointer in him, this makes him brimming with energy. He has plenty of stamina and therefore has very high exercise requirements. He will need regular long walks as well as games and activities to keep him both mentally and physically occupied. This should make him a calmer and happier dog at home.

Finlay lived with another dog previously and they used to play all the time. Since being in our care, we have found that he barks and cries a lot whenever he meets other dogs. This is likely to be frustration as he wants to play with them. He needs to be taught to stay calm and to walk much better on the lead. Finlay is looking for an experienced, active dog owner. One with knowledge of either Border Collies or Pointers would be especially beneficial. He would be most suited living in the countryside or a more rural location where he can run and enjoy his freedom somewhere safe.

Finlay could live with another neutered dog but it must be one that is fairly confident and tolerant as he can be very full on. Alternatively it would do him good if his adopters have plenty of contact with other dogs or are part of a dog walking group. Whoever takes him on must be prepared to provide him with additional training and be patient and work with him. He is only a very young dog so has plenty of potential and is very food motivated. He is not to be rehomed with children as we feel he is too bouncy and could knock them over. Children of secondary school age could be a possibility. He is not to be rehomed with cats.
