Florence is a four year old Bearded Collie Cross, fostered in Norfolk. Florence is one of our ‘special’ dogs. She lived up a mountain in Romania and was never touched by humans. When she was caught by the dog catchers and put into a public shelter her interactions with humans were far from positive experiences and she learnt only to fear them. She was eventually brought to the UK by another rescue but when they realized they didn’t have any fosterers that we’re experienced with dogs this scared they asked if we would take her.
Florence is doing well in her foster home. She is still very quirky and flighty but she is now playing with the other dogs there and also barking and frantically wagging her tail along with the other dogs at feed time and when her foster mum comes home. She is starting to show quite a cheeky character but quickly hides back in her shell in front of anyone new. She is now grudgingly starting to enjoy walks but will still pull to hide in the bushes when other people walk towards her.
We work with a lot of dogs like Florence, it is such a privilege to watch them progress but anyone wanting to take Florence on must realize it maybe weeks or months before they will receive any appreciation back from her. It is important that Florence goes to live with at least one other confident dog that she can watch and learn from. It is also crucial that adopters do not set time limits on when they expect her to be ‘normal’, sometimes these dogs astound us by how quickly they progress in new homes and others take their time and to it at their own pace but all come good in the end with time, love and patience.
Florence has a deformed back foot that has been injured at some point in her past. She only has one toe and sometimes uses it and other times holds it up. Our adoption fee is £250. They are vaccinated, microchipped and neutered (unless they are too young).
